Just like any documentation system, where things get overwritten, it is helpful to know what existed prior to recent edits.
In the case of a Software Documentation application, it becomes more difficult because not only does the documentation change, but the underlying software changes as well. This can be tricky, but the more you can provide a history of changes that a user can help recreate a point in time if needed, the better.
General notification of changes can be beneficial as well, such as being able to view the latest changes to an area of your Software, or the changes by a particular user, or everything that was updated after a recent Software Release.
Historical information can become very valuable at times when trying to understand the overall picture of your Software System.
