I would like to share a little background on why App Overview was created.
I've spent most of my career working on Software Teams. One of the most frustrating parts of working on in-house, bespoke Software at companies of any size, is seeing everyone spending so much time trying to understand how their Software Systems work.
Software has thousands of objects, each with their own story, and each related in some way to other objects. It is a web of relationships, with a lot of information to know about each object and each relationship. And since it can't be documented (without App Overview), then instead of finding information via self-service, there is a heavy reliance on "other people" for this information.
In my observation, this is the biggest inefficiency of the IT Department. I would say over 50% of people's time is spent (aka wasted) researching or trying to piece together and understand what their software does, why it does it that way, when was it changed, who knows most about it, etc.
This research is done for just about every activity: writing requirements, creating time estimates to make a change, impact analysis, testing, fixing defects, adding enhancements, trouble shooting production or post deployment issues, etc. And on top of that, it is usually low quality research because there is only enough time to track down the minimum amount of info, or get it from someone who may miscommunicate it, and sometimes you must just go off of assumptions due to time constraints. The end result impacts everyone along the way: rework from Developers, testers, deployment, customer support, etc. And your customers may also suffer as well. All the while, the current projects are getting behind because of the rework. It's a vicious circle that creates a lot of negative byproducts.
If this information was just a few clicks away, comprehensive, and reliable you could then spend about 90% of your time confidently changing your Software. Everyone would be an expert (on day one, without having to be at the company for years) because you could know anything about your Software you needed to. App Overview would make it like you had been working in the dark all of this time, and then someone suddenly turned the lights on.
