Most software documentation systems are not fast or easy to use. That’s because they do not have a usable underlying structure that allows the documentation to be organized in way that makes finding information intuitive and obvious.
Some documentation methodologies require a somewhat steep learning curve, or learning a “documentation language.” Still others require creating visual drawings, or use case diagrams. These approaches lower the usage, and therefore the chances of success, of a software documentation system.
Ideally, a software documentation system should be so intuitive and obvious to use that anyone with a basic understanding of Software could add, or find what they need, in the same amount of time it takes to document something in other very useful documentation systems, such as their corporate Human Resource application, or a Project management application.
When a software documentation system is fast and easy to use, it becomes widely adopted, thereby allowing it to continually grow and provide value. When it is time-consuming or difficult to use, it eventually becomes worthless and of no value to anyone.
